What is an iButton?
The iButton® device is a IC chip enclosed in a 16mm thick
stainless steel disc container. This unique and durable container,
digital information can travel with a person or object anywhere they go
using a reader designed to work with the iButton. The steel iButton
device can be mounted anywhere because it is rugged enough to withstand
harsh environments and indoors or outdoors temperatures. It is the size
of a Quarter and portable enough to attach to a key fob or ring and be
used daily for tours such as access control to buildings and computers,
tagging assets and similar tasks.
An iButton uses its stainless steel 'can' as an for a secure inclosure.
Each can has a data contact, called the 'lid', and a ground contact,
called the 'base'. Each of these contacts is connected to the IC chip
